Many of us often put others’ needs ahead of our own and guilt ourselves into believing that taking care of ourselves is a selfish act. During these turbulent and uncertain times of the COVID-19 pandemic, we need to alter that mindset. It is more important than ever for us to practice self-care.
Self-care simply means putting your needs first and prioritizing your emotional and physical needs. This may be as simple as engaging in a hobby you once enjoyed and never seemed to have the time to do, taking a long hot bubble bath with no distractions, or just reading a good book (in its entirety). Other activities could include baking (one of my favorites), re-watching a good movie, binge-watching NETFLIX, taking a brisk walk alone or with a loved one, or just taking a nap (one of my brother’s favorites).
Serving as a caregiver to my 80-year-old mother, working full-time, and completing my doctorate, I have learned that it is essential that I find time to practice self-care and find ways to rejuvenate and de-stress. When we feel emotionally, mentally, and physically healthy, we are in a better position to provide care to others. Remember, self-care is NOT selfish!
